Prepping for Your Wedding Day

Wedding planning can be stressful, but try to take some time for yourself leading up to the big day. If you're anything like me, you want your wedding day to be perfect down to the tiniest detail. And part of that is feeling and looking your best. Whether you're the bride, a bridesmaid, or the bride's mother, you deserve to be at your most beautiful.

All eyes will be on you as you walk down the aisle looking like a million bucks. But more importantly, you’ll feel confident and beautiful knowing that you took care of yourself in preparation for this very special day. So go ahead and give yourself a little extra love in the weeks leading up to the big day—you deserve it!

Here are some tips on how to prep for your big day.

Hair

First, let's talk hair care. If you're wearing your hair up, you'll want to ensure it's hydrated and healthy. I like to use a product called Nutrafol Women, which is a supplement that helps with hair growth and overall wellness. It works to target the root causes of compromised hair health, including hormone imbalance, stress, poor metabolism, and aging. I’ve been using this supplement for months now, and I can attest to its effectiveness.

Nutrafol Women, $79

I've also found that getting regular trims leading up to the wedding day helps my hair look its best (this is where I come in!).

Tip: If you color your hair, get a touch-up a few weeks before the big day. However, if you're using supplements for hair growth, take them as directed.

Get That “Lit From Within” Glow

As for skincare, you'll want to start exfoliating and moisturizing regularly. I like to use a gentle exfoliator a few times a week and then follow up with a hydrating mask or serum.

On the wedding day, I would recommend doing a sheet mask to give your skin some extra love. Ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid can hydrate your skin and make it feel plump and glowy.

One Wedding Cliche To Follow

And finally, be sure to get enough sleep, eat well, and drink plenty of water in the weeks leading up to your wedding. Better yet, incorporate these things early into your routine to build a habit. This will help you feel your best on your big day!

Last But Not Least: Have Fun!

I hope these tips can help you prep for your wedding day. Just remember to relax and enjoy the process. It's a very special day but it’s only the first day of the rest of your lives so don’t stress. Just savor every moment. What matters most is what comes after: working and building each other up as you explore this new chapter.

Finding the Right Outfit for the Right Haircut

Fashion is one of the things I like after hair because the two always go hand in hand when creating a look. When you’re building your personal style, you realize that certain outfits would look elevated with the right haircut. Here’s an example: Picture textured layers tucked in a sleek turtleneck top, with a few tendrils to frame the face. It’s a classic look that gives an “off-duty” vibe, perfect for everyday wear, especially during the fall and winter. Ahead, I rounded up my favorite outfit and haircut combos that would look amazing on anyone.

Modern Shag + Tailored Pieces

This popular cut from the ’70s is trendier than ever, and the fashion world can’t stop talking about it. I think this cut would look great with tailored or structural pieces like blazers, asymmetrical dresses, and block heels. For accessories, opt for geometric earrings or chunky chain necklaces to complement the boldness of this hairstyle.

Hairstyle Hack: After blow-drying your hair, finish with a flexible hold hairspray to lock your look in place. I recommend L'Oreal Professionnel Infinium 3.

Pixie Cut + Soft Fabrics

The pixie cut is one of the most popular styles I do at the salon. It’s versatile and it gives an edgy look. I would pair this haircut with any outfit made from soft fabric. Think silk satin, cashmere, and linen.

Hairstyle Hack: Use a texturizing spray or balm to add dimension to your hair. Reverie's Mediterranean Sea Mist is perfect here. Spray on wet or dry hair. Dry naturally, scrunching with your hands to encourage natural wave or curl.

Bob Cut + Collared Tops and Dresses

Also a popular choice, bobs are a fun hairstyle to try all year round. Seeing the likes of Anna Wintour, this hairstyle can go with many outfits as well. I picked collared tops and dresses because I think they create a playful look against a bob cut. Whether it’s an asymmetrical or single-length cut, it will look great with any collared piece.

Hairstyle Hack: Smooth your tresses with a round or flat brush, try the Ibiza medium size brush styling and Reverie Milk serum for a sleek shine that will last throughout the day.

Brushed-Out Waves + Flowy Silhouettes

Brushed-out waves are so versatile because they look fantastic no matter what you wear. However, I chose to pair this cut with flowy silhouettes for that disco-inspired look. If you have long hair, simply get a trim and style your hair as usual. Brushed-out waves add a dramatic flair to any look, which is why maxi dresses, long skirts, wide-leg pants, or kimonos would look great for this hairstyle.

Hairstyle Hack: Invest in boar-bristle brushes. They don’t cause annoying static or frizz, making them the perfect tools for brushing out your gorgeous waves. Try the Janeke travel size brush.

Dare To Step Out of Your (Style) Comfort Zone

I am no fashion guru, but I do have a keen eye for proportions. These are outfit recommendations that I think would look beautiful with certain haircuts, so if you want to try any of them, you have my support. I love seeing my clients transform with their new cuts, more so if they combine it with their personal fashion sense.

’70s Hair Is Back—Here's How To Style Those Groovy Hairstyles

The ’70s was a prime time for fashion and beauty, specifically hair. As someone who has worked through the golden eras of hairstyles, I expected this renaissance. I welcome this trend with open arms because retro hairstyles are simply timeless. I don’t think much has changed from how people wore it then to how people are wearing it today. These styles could be worn the same way, from feathery chops to edgy mullets, and they’d still look just as fantastic.

If you find these styles a little much, you’ll be relieved to know that most are actually wearable, easy to style, and oh-so-chic! To prove my point, I’ve selected five hairstyles from the disco era that would look great on women of all ages.

The Hive Updo

Perhaps the most intimidating hairstyle on this list, beehives are easy to pull off if you have the right tools and styling products. It’s such an iconic hairstyle that even today, celebrities like Beyonce, Adele, and Jennifer Lopez sport this glamorous updo. Try it and you’ll find that it looks great no matter your age.

The key to getting this look on your own is by adding a texture spray, like Densite by L’Oreal Professionnel and blow-drying your hair for a couple more minutes on the top to create more volume. Tease the hair slightly, then smooth with a teasing comb and pin. Spray a little light-hold hairspray throughout.

Shop BioIonic hair dryers here.

Feathery and Free-Spirited

Three words: The Farrah Flip. The iconic Charlie’s Angel left a mark in the beauty world with her effortless and flowy feathered hair. This style bled into the ’80s and ’90s as well, proving its timeless appeal and wearability. Until today, the layered hairstyle is all the rage on TikTok and is loved by celebrities like Hailee Steinfeld and Lizzo.

With a few hair rollers, a good barrel brush, a blow dryer, or a curling iron, you can achieve this look. Seal it with hairspray, and you’re ready to strut. My favorite is the Infinium 3 by L'Oreal Professionnel, I keep a few cans on my shelf at the salon.

Fringe + Single-Length

The fringe is optional, but if you want that extra oomph to your look, go for it! Look to the likes of Cher, Kylie Kloss, and Alexa Chung for some inspiration. Today’s version has a more relaxed look, with longer bangs and light layers to add dimension depending on your face shape. It’s a low-maintenance hairstyle that you can wear on different occasions, from weddings to corporate events.

To style, all you need is a good smoothing cream or styling balm to keep your tresses looking sleek and fresh. I love Milk by Reverie for this purpose!

Modern Shag

Shaggy hair for women over 40? Absolutely! I love this hairstyle because besides it being versatile, it gives you a youthful glow that looks natural and beautiful. If you’re thinking of switching up your look, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try this look. This haircut will look amazing, whether you have curly hair or straight hair. Just look at Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus for inspiration.

Spray Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist for this look on wet hair and blow-dry with a flat brush, then add Rake Styling Balm on dry hair for texture. Both are available at my studio.

Long and Wavy

The ’70s was a time for free-flowing locks that swayed with the wind. Today, this hairstyle remains a go-to for many women because it’s effortless, low-maintenance, and flattering.

Give it a retro spin with a middle part or move it all the way to the side for a more dramatic look. Whether you wear it wavy or curly, this hairstyle is a sure showstopper. The Mediterranean Sea Mist is a good call here again. Use a big round brush to create waves.

Proof That Bangs Are Beautiful at Any Age

Anyone who has ever tried getting a fringe—blunt, wispy, curly—would say that this style is quite polarizing. It has the ability to transform your look drastically with just a few snips. Bangs give a naturally youthful look, making it a go-to for women of all ages. If you’re intimidated by this style, don’t be! There are many ways to wear a fringe today, from middle-parted styles to classic side parts. I rounded up a few hairstyle inspirations you might want to try for the new season.

Curtain Bangs

This face-framing style is a crowd favorite, and I can see why. Not only is it a versatile look, it’s also a style that flatters any face shape, and can be used to hide wide foreheads or slim down round cheeks. It’s a low-maintenance option that you can actually do yourself (if you’re confident cutting your hair, that is).

The key to maintaining curtain bangs is to trim them often. You’ll want to keep that “growing it out” look because that’s the charm of this specific fringe style. What I love the most about curtain bangs is that it suits any hair type, so don’t let your waves, curls, or coils hold you back!

Full-On Fringe

If you want to make a statement, this style is as blunt as it gets (no pun intended!). Actress and musician   Zooey Deschanel is the epitome of this style, proving that full bangs look amazing and flattering no matter your age.

To style, use a styling mist or serum, then blow-dry for a more volumized look. You can also go over your fringe with a flat iron for a sleek look.

Wispy Bangs

Wispy bangs are perfect for those who can’t commit to the full fringe just yet. Because of her long but wispy bangs, actress, director, and writer Rashida Jones has the option to wear them full on her forehead or brush them up or to the side for variation.

You can blowdry your wispy bangs front and forward if you want a full-bangs look. And you can get away with sweeping your bangs on both sides, then rake them gently with your fingers for a fuller head of hair. It’s another low-maintenance option if you don’t have the patience to keep your fringe in place. Style it with a texturizing spray to give your bangs more body and fluff.

Feathered Fringe

Popularized in the late ’70s, feathered bangs have come a long way to becoming one of the most timeless hairstyles ever. It’s a flattering style that frames the face beautifully regardless of your face shape. Look at how her long fringe beautifully frames the face of actress, singer and beauty brand owner Jennifer Lopez.

Made to complement layered hairstyles, feathered bangs go with any haircut. They also bring a certain softness to your look, giving you a youthful and vibrant glow. To style, blow-dry your bangs on each side away from the face to create the perfect flip. Spritz on a texturizing spray or light-hold hairspray to keep your fringe in place.

Curly Fringe

Gone are the days when bangs were deemed flattering only for straight hair. More and more women are trying out curly bangs, and I love how they add character and dimension to any look! Just take a look at the curly bangs of actress (and daughter of Diana Ross) Traci Ellis Ross.

Whether you’re currently rocking a bob, lob, single-length, or shaggy hairstyle, a fringe will effortlessly elevate your look and make you appear more youthful. Use a texturizing spray to style your bangs and gently scrunch to form beautiful curls.

I hope you were inspired by the bangs inspirations I rounded up. If want to try bangs for a new look, the new season, or just for a new you, book an appointment at ShineForth Salon and I’ll be happy to give you the best bangs style for you.

The Best Haircuts and Hair Care Products Designed for Men

We are bombarded with women's hair trends every year, but only a few options are available for men. What does 2022 have in store for our dapper gents? Are fades still in? Or do men prefer longer, more carefree locks?

I researched and found that this year’s hair trends have a good mix of both, from elevated fades to textured cuts. Styling men’s hair can be fun if you know which styles to go for. I also thought it would be a great idea to list my favorite hair products for men so that they can get started on building a hair care routine.

Haircuts

Flowy & Natural

Also called the “bro flow,” this look is a modern take on the rugged hairstyle that was popular in the ’70s. It features soft waves that curl away from the face, framing it beautifully. This cut gives a more relaxed vibe and is low-maintenance. It’s suitable for men with thick, medium-length hair.

Natural Curls

This seems like a universal trend, but I love it because I’m all for embracing your hair’s natural texture! Curls are relatively easier to maintain for men, but it still depends on the hair length. You can opt for a mop-top, clean side-swept curls, or even a mullet if you want a trendy style.

Clean & Balanced

If you’re more of a minimalist, this look is for you. Balance is key to achieving a fluid silhouette, especially on the top and sides, which you can get by adding layers and textures. You can pair it with a mild scruff to add an edge to your look (just remember to keep it groomed).

Hair Products

Salt Spray: Mare by Reverie

Salt sprays are perfect for creating soft waves and reviving dull textures. The Reverie Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist contains algae extract and uses Mediterranean sea salt to volumize and condition the hair.
How to Use: Spray on damp or dry hair, then scrunch the ends to shape waves or curls.

Hair Serum or Oil: Reverie Ever Hair Oil

Hair serums only became popular in recent years, thanks to skincare giants that pushed this product onto everybody’s beauty shelves. If you’re not fond of using many hair products, a serum or lightweight oil like Reverie Ever Recovery Hair Oil may work well for you. It tames frizz, protects the hair, and adds shine.

How to Use: Apply a few drops onto your palm and smooth through damp hair. Start in the roots down to the ends.

Pomade or Balm: Rake Hair Balm by Reverie

Look for a firm-hold pomade that creates volume and doesn’t leave any buildup. It’s a good alternative for hair wax because the formula is more manageable and hydrating. This Reverie Rake Hair Balm is suitable for all hair types, which is perfect if you like to keep a low-maintenance hair routine.

How to Use: With your fingers, apply a small amount to damp or dry hair. Work the product on the ends to achieve a smoother look.

6 Best Bridal Hairstyles for Spring/Summer 2022

We’re back to planning weddings again, so searching for the perfect bridal hair, gown, shoes, and accessories is more crucial than ever. As a hairstylist, I understand how important it is to look and feel your most beautiful on your big day. While I make it a point to consider the bride’s face shape, dress style, and theme, some clients would still request a trending hairstyle—and that’s okay! Every bride deserves their dream wedding hair.

With that said, I took it upon myself to look at this year’s biggest bridal hair trends and pick some of my favorites.

The Undone Updo

With micro-weddings becoming more popular, more brides prefer a ‘messy’ but chic look a la Meghan Markle on her wedding day. It exudes an ethereal vibe perfect for boho brides. This look is done by pinning pretty waves in a low bun and leaving a few strands curled at the front.

Mermaid Waves

Stunning mermaid waves are excellent for laid-back brides who still want a touch of elegance to their look. Glossy and voluminous curls give off an old Hollywood vibe, making it a perfect complement to your glamorous wedding dress. This style is versatile for any neckline, whether it’s a sweetheart, square, strapless, or asymmetrical neckline. I love mermaid waves because you can adorn them with a lovely tiara or a flower crown as a finishing touch!

Elegant Chignon

If you want something elegant yet sweet, opt for a classic chignon. It’s simple but versatile enough to style however you want, whether you like your chignon braided or a little bit relaxed. You can also incorporate unique accessories like flowers or pearl pins to elevate your look.

Long and Volumized Braids

Braids have been a long-running trend in the beauty world, and bridal hairstyles are no exception. There are many ways to wear them, from loose plaits to big fishtail braids. Braids are also fun to accessorize. For example, you can weave in dainty flowers for a unique and romantic look or insert embellished pins, combs, and more.

Half Upstyles

If you are looking for the perfect in-between bridal hairstyle, you can’t go wrong with this one. Kate Middleton wore her hair just like this on her big day. Like mermaid waves, this style suits laid-back brides who still want a polished look. It looks gorgeous with an off-the-shoulder dress or a lace gown. A half upstyle hairdo is also perfect for accessorizing. Think flower inserts or crystal clips to add character.

Natural Curls With Hair Accessories

For ladies with beautiful, textured hair, any hairstyle would look fabulous on you! For instance, a half-up half-down hairstyle is best for a daytime glam look, and then you can let your hair down in the evening for a more relaxed look. For more drama, accessorize with gemstone clips, flower inserts, or a tiara.

Ready to Say “Yes” to the Hair?

Age-Defying Hairstyle Ideas—They Exist!

Sometimes, no matter how extensive your skincare arsenal is, nothing can make you look and feel youthful than a flattering hairstyle. I understand that looking young isn’t the end-all-be-all of life, but if switching up your hairdo can make you feel 10 years younger, I’m here to help.

You want to consider length, color, and style when choosing a hairstyle. The right cut can open up your face or accentuate features that weren’t that visible because of your current hairstyle. Whatever suits your vibe, be sure to communicate it to your stylist so that they have a clearer vision of what you want.

Forget the fountain of youth—opt for the crown of youth instead (your hair!).

Wavy Lob

There’s a reason why lobs are a favorite of many. It’s the sweet spot between long and short, with its shoulder-length layers grazing the decolletage and framing the face. It’s also so easy to style. Adding soft waves or curls can elevate this classic cut further and give it a relaxed, edgy vibe.

Feathered Shoulder Length

This is similar to a lob but a few inches shorter. It has more noticeable layers that frame the face beautifully. I love this hairstyle because it is customizable, meaning you can work with your stylist (or me!) to create the best layers for your look.

Textured Pixie

If you were a cool girl before, you’re a cool girl now with this cut. Pixie styles bring out your best features because it opens and brightens up the face. Whether it’s on the longer or shorter side, pixies offer volume that is effortlessly flattering for any age.

Bob With Wispy Bangs

Like its cooler counterpart, the lob, bobs are perfect for any age. They’re incredibly easy to style, plus they’re suitable for any hair type. A bob with wispy bangs gives off a youthful vibe because it hides lines and frames the face tightly. Coordinate with your stylist to get the correct length for you.

Big, Voluminous Curls

This hairstyle is a no-brainer. Go for over-the-top volume paired with a deep side part to get that dramatic look. Any woman who can carry big curls exudes youth, exuberance, and confidence. You can also style it into a messy bun for a laid-back look.

Full Bangs

We have Anna Wintour to thank for making full, blunt bangs acceptable for any age. This fringe style may look dramatic, but if it works for you, go for it! It’s perfect for hiding lines and drawing attention to your eyes. Here’s a quick tip: If you have a round or oval face, it’s better to ask for a softer fringe that’s slightly feathered.

Long and Layered Beach Waves

Think of this hairstyle as a modern take on Farrah Fawcett’s iconic waves. Depending on the season, you can opt for loose waves for spring and summer and amp up the volume for fall and winter. You can also ask your stylist to choose a flattering hair color to make your waves pop more.

A flattering hairstyle truly can shave years off your look. Come over to ShineForth Salon and let me help you find the perfect cut for you.

What You Need To Know About Hair Oils: Benefits & How To Use Them

Like the skin, your hair needs moisture and a little oil to keep it healthy and hydrated. However, navigating through hair oils can be intimidating. There are tons of them in the market, but finding one that works best for your strands is the challenge. You want your hair to look gleaming but not to the point that it’s oily or greasy.

For example, thick and textured hair can benefit from richer oils like cold-pressed castor or coconut oil than lightweight oils. Ahead, we’ll explore some of the best hair oils for each hair type and how to incorporate them into your routine.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil comes from grape seeds and is a byproduct of winemaking. It’s a powerful antioxidant ingredient and moisturizer, making it a perfect product to work into your strands. It’s usually associated with skincare and cooking, but it also works wonders for all hair types.

Key benefits:

  • It helps with hair growth. Grapeseed oil contains vitamin E, linoleic acid, and flavonoids, which are all necessary to support hair growth.

  • Strengthens strands. Does your hair feel weak and brittle? Grapeseed oil can help restore your hair’s vitality because of its rich omega content.

  • Soothes your scalp. Grapeseed oil contains essential fatty acids and nutrients that have anti-inflammatory properties to help relieve an itchy, flaky scalp.

Best for: All hair types, including color-treated hair

Castor Oil

Castor oil is one of the more popular hair oils because it’s also used to treat skin problems. This nutrient-dense oil has healing properties that help nourish and protect hair. It’s also used for hair loss, but there is no clinical evidence that it helps hair grow faster or thicker. Still, castor oil is a reputable hair oil that packs a lot of benefits.

Key benefits:

  • Contains antimicrobial properties. Castor oil helps fight fungal or bacterial overgrowth, resulting in healthier strands.

  • Increases absorption of other products. Other products might penetrate more effectively if you incorporate castor oil into your hair routine. For example, it works well with carrier oils like coconut oil to further moisturize the hair.

Best for: Those with dry, flaky scalps and weak strands

Almond Oil

Almond oil comes primarily from sweet almonds and is extracted by pressing the nuts to yield unrefined oil. It contains high levels of protein, omega-9 fatty acids, vitamin E, and squalene which is an excellent hydrator.

Key benefits:

  • Promotes hair growth. According to hair experts, almond oil contains a substantial amount of biotin that helps the hair grow as it stimulates keratin production and follicle regrowth.

  • Revives dull, dry hair. If your hair has been feeling and looking lackluster lately, almond oil can rejuvenate and bring the shine back to your locks. All thanks to its fatty acids!

Best for:  Damaged and dry hair

Use hair oils once or twice a week

Once you’ve picked the right hair oil, I suggest following the “less is more” route. It is still an oil, so using too much can result in greasy strands for you. For instance, if you have fine hair, best to use hair oils as a treatment once a week. If you have curly, thick, or textured hair, you can opt to use a hair oil twice a week.

Simple Tips on Cutting Curly and Textured Hair

If there’s anything I’ve learned as a hairstylist in the past few years, cutting textured hair can be really rewarding. Textured hair requires a specific care routine to keep it soft, healthy, and bouncy, and haircuts are definitely part of that care. From wavy to tight coils, there is no “one cut fits all” approach to cutting curly hair.

Luckily for you, I love working on beautifully textured hair! I’ve mastered different techniques for cutting and styling curly hair (just ask my clients!), so I’m excited to share with you what I know. Ahead, I’ve listed some do’s and don’ts for cutting curly and textured hair.

Do: Skip the Shampoo

Starting with a nice wash is one red flag you need to watch out for. But let me be clear: There’s nothing wrong with a bit of shampoo before haircuts—it’s just not the way to go with textured or curly hair. Shampoo fluffs up the curls, making cutting more difficult since the hair’s natural shape is gone. Remember to ask for a dry cut so that your curls are relaxed. So no shampoo but you might try conditioning the hair instead, which nourishes the curls.

Depending on how tight the curl is, sometimes I will fluff out the hair completely to see the shape to determine the cut I’ll give, the condition of the hair at the bowl, and then I style. In other words, when it comes to curls, cutting and caring for the hair is not a one size fits all method.

Don’t: Add tension when cutting

Doing so obscures the curl pattern, resulting in a shorter, possibly unflattering cut. Pay attention to how the stylist holds your curls when cutting. Less tension means your curls will not bounce too close to the head once released. There shouldn’t be a lot of finger tension and comb tension either.

Do: Mind the length

Length matters when cutting curly hair because it naturally shrinks up when dry. Talk to your stylist about how much length you want to be removed. When in doubt, always err on the side of caution and go for the “less is more” route. You can also consult this with your hairstylist. After all, they should know what’s best for your hair.

Don’t: Use any hair products beforehand

This is pretty self-explanatory. Hair products can weigh down your curls and make it difficult to see what the hair naturally wants to do, so it’s best to go au naturel when you visit your hairstylist. It’s always best to work with your textured hair in its most natural state.  Save your styling products after getting your haircut.

Do: Schedule a consultation first

I’ve discussed how important it is to choose the right hairstylist for you in a previous blog post. Once you’ve found the one, the next step is to set an appointment to discuss the ideal cut for your hair type. A good stylist always considers hair density, growth patterns, and different curl types on various sections of your head. You should also keep a few questions in mind so that your stylist has all the information they need before working their magic on your hair.

It’s time to embrace your hair’s natural texture

Consider yourself blessed and unique if you’re part of the curly-haired tribe. Whatever your curl type is, there’s a perfect cut for you, so don’t be afraid to try new styles that let your natural texture stand out.

These Hair Colors Are Ready to Take Over This Spring

Spring is in the air, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not excited. It’s a season that brings forth new beginnings, from watching flowers bloom to spring cleaning. Spring is also a great time to debut a new look. If you’ve been waiting all winter to give yourself a hair color makeover, now’s the time! Whether you’re looking for a low-maintenance tone or a full 180-degree switch, there’s a color for everyone. Read on to see the shades that will rule this season.

Retro Copper

Reds made a huge comeback in 2021, and it looks like the color is here for spring, too. Warm tones are definitely in this year, and celebrities like Jessica Chastain and Zendaya have proven that it’s flattering for everyone.

Care Tip: Use a sulfate-free shampoo to keep your hair color vibrant, followed by a moisturizing conditioner to improve shine. Try Innersense Color Awakening Hairbath and Color Radiance Conditioner.

Balayage

This technique is elevated to the ‘ring light balayage’ for 2022. It’s called as such because it creates strong face-framing highlights similar to the effect of a ring light shining on your face. Unlike the old balayage, the lighter hue is applied delicately to the roots as it gradually gets thicker and brighter towards the ends.

Care Tip: If you have dark roots, make sure to schedule touch-ups (at least every four months) to maintain your balayage. Try to deep condition your hair every week to keep your locks soft and moisturized.

Luxe Warm Brown

The ‘expensive brunette’ look was big during winter, and it seems like the trend continues this spring. Rich, dark tones give an edgier look, but for spring, add some lowlights for a brighter vibe. The color gives a youthful look, too—the perfect choice for women in their 40s and 50s.

Care Tip: Since brown is a low-maintenance shade, you don’t need to touch-up every few months. Using a sulfate-free shampoo also helps in keeping your color vibrant.

Auburn

Meet copper’s edgier sister. Auburn reminds me of the 1920s when women dressed in sparkly flapper dresses and they wore their hair coiled to perfection. It’s an unexpected tone to try for spring but chic nonetheless. I personally think this shade looks great on textured hair, so I recommend you try it!

Care Tip: For reds, using a toning glaze will keep your hair looking shiny and moisturized between appointments.

Ash Blonde with a Dark Base

Of all the blondes, ash blondes are the most popular this season. This spring twist is best for those who want to go lighter but want to keep a dark base. You can also ask your stylist for a balayage to achieve this look.

Care Tip: Add hair oil, like Ever Recovery Hair Oil, to your hair care routine to make your highlights last longer and keep them from fading.

Spring is the best time to get colorful. If you’re ready for a hair refresh, book an appointment at ShineForth Salon and let’s get the perfect hair tone you have been longing for!

When Should You Switch to a Sulfate-Free Shampoo?

“Sulfate-free” has become quite the buzzword in the hair care industry for some time now. If you go to any beauty aisle, you will find yourself in a sea of hair products labeled as such. Technically, sulfate-free is the better option—but how do you know if you need to make the switch? Are sulfates really that bad? Let’s explore below.

What are sulfates?

To put it simply, sulfates are responsible for making your shampoo sudsy. They help wash away grime and dead skin cells from your hair and scalp. The most common sulfates you can find in shampoos are sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and ammonium laureth sulfate, with the ‘-eth’ sulfates being milder than the ‘-lyl’ ones.

According to experts, sulfates are good cleaning agents, which is why they can also be found in other beauty products like cleansers, toothpaste, and more. When it comes to shampoo, sulfates may be irritating if you have a sensitive scalp so you might want to make the switch to a sulfate-free formula.

Who can benefit from sulfate-free shampoos?

Aside from those with a sensitive scalp, you should consider a sulfate-free shampoo if you have color-treated hair. Sulfates can strip off more moisture and color, leaving your hair dry, brittle, and even prone to damage. You should also avoid sulfates if you have kinky or frizzy hair. Opting for a sulfate-free shampoo can help maintain your hair’s natural oils to keep it moisturized.

Here are a few wonderful benefits of going sulfate-free:

  1. Preserves hair color

  2. Safer for the environment

  3. Helps retain hair moisture

  4. Reduces irritation

  5. Tear-free

One downside of using a sulfate-free shampoo is your hair might still feel a little greasy after taking a shower. Since sulfates are what make shampoos bubbly, you won’t get the same results with a sulfate-free product.

I recommend looking for organic or plant-based shampoos, such as Innersense. They have three sulfate-free formulas that I swear by—Pure Inspiration Hairbath for finer hair textures, Hydrating Hairbath for thick, dehydrated hair, and the Color Awakening Shampoo for color-treated hair.

I have these products in my studio and website, so if you want to purchase one for yourself, just send me a message!

Sulfates are not the evil people claim them to be

Since sulfates are only used in small amounts and low concentrations, they are not that bad for you. It all depends on your skin sensitivity and hair type. For example, if you have oily hair, sulfates can help lift excess oil and wash it away. There is also a matter of preference. If you love a good lather, a sulfate shampoo could be better for you! It feels like a self-care treat more than anything, plus the added bonus of cleaner hair.

The Verdict

You don’t have to throw away your current shampoo to replace it with a sulfate-free one. Everyone has different preferences and hair types, so it’s always wise to go with what’s best for you. If you have a better experience with sulfate-free shampoos, then this might be the time to commit. Some manufacturers use an alternative called olefin sulfate, which is a milder non-sulfate alternative. However, if you’re not keen on all this and just want that rich lather, sulfates are no big deal.

5 Popular Hair Myths You Need To Stop Believing in 2022

You have probably had your fair share of hair myths thrown at you, from trimming your hair every 4 to 6 weeks for “faster growth” to avoiding conditioner if you have greasy hair. We have accepted these as facts without question, but just how true are they? I am here to help you separate fact from fiction so that your hair care game is on point this 2022.

Myth #1: Trimming your hair often makes it grow quicker.

Truth: The most logical explanation to debunk this myth is that hair growth occurs at the roots and not at the ends. Cutting your hair every 4 to 6 weeks will not make your hair grow any faster. What it does though is it helps with your hair’s overall growth because you are trimming the split ends, which can make your hair look more damaged (except for those who like to keep the shape maintained).

I recommend going for a trim between 8 to 12 weeks if you are trying to grow your hair out. Keeping split ends at bay will result in healthier hair growth. You can also upgrade your routine by getting products that nourish your hair from the roots to strengthen it. You will want to invest in supplements that help combat stress responses in the body and support hair growth and your general health and well-being.

Try Nutrafol supplements for healthy hair growth. Check out how.

Myth #2: Your shampoo stops being effective after a while.

Truth: This myth probably came from the idea that certain products stop working after you “get used to them.” There is little to no evidence supporting this theory, so you better hold onto that shampoo bottle before you toss it out and replace it with a new one. According to hair experts, switching shampoos too often may actually be worse for your hair. There’s a chance your pH balance will be off and might lead to a dry scalp and even breakage.

Myth #3: Older women should avoid long hairstyles.

Truth: Absolutely not! Hair length is not the issue when we age, it’s the state and health of our hair. As long as your hair health is thriving, then you can style your hair however you want—long, mid-length, or short!

Check out hairstyles for women over 40.

Myth #4: Plucking one gray hair can cause two more to grow back.

Truth: There has been no scientific evidence that plucking one gray strand can cause two to grow back. Each strand is attached to one hair follicle only, so this myth is most definitely busted. Time to let out a sigh of relief!

Myth #5: Air-drying is better than blow-drying.

We touched on this when I wrote about my favorite blow-dryers, but this time, we are getting into the science of it all. In theory, air-drying your hair seems better than blasting it with a dryer. Your hair strands swell when they come into contact with water. This means that the longer your hair is wet or damp, the more pressure it puts on your hair’s proteins.

One way to dry your hair without damaging it is by air-drying between 10 to 30 minutes (depending on your hair length and type) and using a hair dryer on a cold setting to dry completely.

See my list of best hair dryers!

2022 Hair Trends That Look Great on Women Over 40

They say life begins at 40, and I agree! You are more confident with how you present yourself, and you could care less about other people’s opinions because deep down, you are secure and at peace with yourself.

Speaking of confidence, your 40s is also the perfect time to find a signature hairstyle to express yourself. You want a haircut that is flattering, modern, and age-defying (yes, there is such a thing!). Also, hair care should be a top priority as many women at this age already experience thinning, brittleness, and even hair fall.

With that said, here are five hairstyles modeled by my own ShineForth clients that reflect a more youthful glow while still looking sophisticated.

Layered Bob

There are many types of bob cuts, but the layered version is a favorite. It has enough layers to provide texture in the front, allowing the hair to keep its volume. This style is an excellent option for women with fine or thinning hair.

How to Style: Opt for a tousled look with a volumizing spray, or create chic waves with a blow-dryer and a good brush. Nurture curls if you have them, and lock in moisture with EVER Recovery Hair Oil from Reverie.

French Bob With Fringe

I talked about bobs earlier, but this time we have the A-line style with a soft fringe. Bangs always come through with that youthful appeal, so if you want something completely new, I suggest going for this cut.

How to Style: If you have straight hair, keep your mane soft and smooth by blow drying and applying a RAKE Styling Balm. However, if you have textured locks, hair oil works best to keep it smooth without weighing the hair down.

Layered Lob

Lobs became popular a few years ago, and they are still a trendy haircut now. A lob is an edgy spin to the classic bob. It’s slightly longer than a normal bob haircut and draws attention to your face shape beautifully.

How to Style: Do a deep side part to add drama to your hairstyle. Apply a bit of the I Create Lift  by Innersense for volume and hold.  If you want to take it up a notch, add a dainty barrette or hairpin for an unexpected but stylish look!

Single-Length Cut

With the resurgence of 2000’s trends, one-length hairstyles are in once again. With just a few layers to provide enough movement and volume, they highlight your best features and frame your lovely face. If you can’t decide on which style to get and want to start somewhere “safe,” you can never go wrong with layers.

How to Style: Spritz on a texture spray to add more dimension to your look. For a sleeker look, part your hair in the middle and apply a little bit of lightweight hair oil to keep your locks smooth.

Pixie Cut

This sleek and classic hairstyle is one of the easiest cuts to maintain ever, making it ideal for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time perfecting their hairdo. Whether you have fine and thinning, or thick hair, this style is FRESH.

How to Style: Let me be the first to tell you that hair accessories are timeless. Pixie cuts are easy to style. Just switch up your look by wearing a headband or opting for a slicked-back look. Use a styling product with a bit of hold, like MARE Mediterranean Sea Mist  by Reverie.

Nutrafol Is Coming to ShineForth Salon

You have been asking about what you can do about hair loss, and I have come bearing great news. For two years, I have been following this company to bring this product into salons, and I am happy to announce that it will be available in my studio next week!

Let me introduce you to Nutrafol, a natural supplement that supports hair health through whole-body wellness. It works by multi-targeting key imbalances in the body that may be contributing to hair loss. Made with clinically tested and medical-grade plant extracts, it delivers consistency, potency, and of course, results.

Targets the 5 Root Causes of Poor Hair Health

Have you ever been so stressed that your hair starts to fall? That’s because stress pushes your hair to a resting phase, causing hair fall. As a hairstylist, this is a nightmare! Other factors like hormones, poor metabolism, nutrition, and the environment affect overall health and therefore can impact your hair significantly. Nutrafol works to target those key factors and provide additional support, improving your overall health and your hair.

So, what exactly are the ingredients that make Nutrafol so special?

Clean Powerhouse Ingredients for Hair Growth

The science behind Nutrafol is simple. It’s made with a blend of concentrated plant ingredients in standardized dosages. This includes saw palmetto, marine collagen, Sensoril® Ashwagandha, curcumin, tocotrienol complex, and kelp, among other things.

One of its most important features is the Synergen ComplexⓇ, which works to improve scalp health and produce stronger strands. All of their products contain unique ingredient ratios suited to the different needs of men and women.

Nutrafol’s natural approach makes it an easy product to try. You get hair growth results without drugs, giving you peace of mind from any side effects. Your hair is your crowning glory after all, so it deserves all the TLC it can get to keep it strong, shiny, beautiful, and oh-so healthy. You may even be able to stop taking some of your own supplements because this one contains so much.

It’s never too late to take care of your body. Whether you are a beginner at supplements or you simply can’t find the right one, this is a pretty good place to start. I will start taking it as soon as I receive it and share my journey with you.

Let’s Start This Hair Journey Together!

I will begin with the Women’s Balance formula and the Stress Adaptogen. The Women’s Balance formula is a daily hair growth supplement tailored for women before, during, and after menopause. It’s a good starting place if you are new to hair supplements or if you want to switch up your routine.

If you are interested in any of their other formulas, let me know and I can order for you, as I have limited space in my salon. You can check out their website here for more information: Nutrafol.com

You can purchase a 3-month supply for $207 plus tax. Reach out to me at 510-459-8967 if you want to snag one for yourself. It’s a lifelong investment in your health and your hair.

My Favorite Hair-Dryers for the Best Blowout Ever: 2022 Edition

Thanks to the latest technology, achieving salon-style hair has never been easier. For instance, hair tools such as dryers have come a long way when it comes to quality. In addition to giving you a gorgeous blowout, some of the best hair-dryers we have today contribute to hair health.

There's a pervading belief that blow-drying the hair is damaging. Tim Moore, PhD in Microelectronics from Cambridge University and Chief Technology Officer at Good Hair Day, explains, “Hair can absorb up to 30 per cent of its own weight in water. The longer it stays wet, the worse things get, as it continues to swell.” All that water affects the molecular structure of your hair, weakening it. It’s healthier for the hair to be quickly and properly dried rather than prolonging its wet and weakened state. This means having the right blow-dryer can make a huge difference and is more crucial than ever.

Generally, there are five things that I look for in a dryer: weight, length, multiple heat options, a cold shot button, and design (who doesn’t want a stylish hair-dryer?!). I took the liberty to give you a roundup of my favorite blow-dryers so that you have an idea where to start. Check them out below.

What Makes a Great Hair-Dryer?

The first two factors—weight and length—are important if you travel frequently or use a blow-dryer regularly. You want something weighty enough to know it’s good quality but light enough for you to use comfortably. I like using the nozzle that usually comes with a dryer. It directs the airflow exactly where you point it and dries the hair quickly. Length, on the other hand, is crucial as well because when you’re drying your hair, it can be more challenging or even uncomfortable if the barrel is too long.

When it comes to heating options, simple is best. You only need three settings: hot, medium, and a cool shot button to set your style. You can spend $99 on a dryer or splurge on fancier ones that cost $400 and up. At the end of the day, it’s about finding a blow-dryer that works for you.

Here are my recommendations:

1. Bio Ionic GoldPro Travel Dryer

For professional-quality results that last, check out the Bio Ionic GoldPro Travel Dryer. You can't beat the price point on this one. It's stylish and has the Bio Ionic Moisturizing Heat™ Technology that keeps your hair soft and healthy. This dryer also folds up, making it easy to pack for a quick weekend getaway (are we doing that yet?).

Shop Bio Ionic dryers.

2. Ergo TT2000 Blow Dryer

The Ergo TT2000 Blow Dryer is a godsend for those who want an ergonomic design that delivers. I haven't tried it personally, but I know many stylists who have this as their holy grail hair tool. It has a small body, so it’s easy to hold and is portable, plus the 10-foot cord allows you to move around and style with ease. It’s definitely a must-buy if you want an everyday dryer that gets the job done in a jiff.

Shop Ergo dryers. Use the code ERGOLOVE10 to get 10% off your first order!

3. IQ Perfetto Hair Dryer by Gama Professional

The IQ Perfetto Hair Dryer is what I use in the salon every day. Its sleek and ergonomic design is comparable to popular dryers available today. This dryer delivers incredible power with a 110,000 RPM motor, giving maximum results with little effort. It’s also light enough for me to use all day long without any discomfort on my wrist. If you’re willing to pay more for an everyday tool that can stand daily usage, this will be perfectly sufficient for you, along with the Ergo and Bio Ionic dryer.

Shop Gama Professional dryers.

I am thrilled to bring in the new year. This time of year is all about envisioning what I want my life, my business and focus to be about. How about you?

This year, my focus and commitment continues to be about bringing you the best attention I can by taking care of myself, and sustaining good, positive energy and health.

In looking for hair color and hair design inspiration I came across this article: "Negative Space" Hair Is the Coolest Winter Color Technique Every London It Girl Is Wearing.

And if you are looking for those hues that speak to the more colorful, Blue seems to be it. The image that captures my heart is this well-executed color. and this one I love! Blush tones are a softer way of playing with hair color. These all require lightening the hair first, then toning with an overlay of color. I use the Balayage technique to achieve these looks. sometimes less is more.

4.    Pull out the bangs to frame your face.

Subtly Tousled Blonde Braid

Do you have light-colored hair? Then this hairstyle will make your natural highlights stand out and look fabulous, as well as adding more interest to the braids.

How To Style

1.    Apply a little Volumetry to dry hair and blow-dry a bit. Brush your hair backward.

2.    Tie your hair into a fish braid, starting a couple of inches below the nape of the neck. You may need to bring it to the front to finish off.

3.    You can loosen up the braid once you have it banded.

4.    Pull out a few thin sections of hair to frame your face.

Take your time with these the first time you play. If you get frustrated, take a deep breath, and try again. Sometimes it is helpful to have these styles shown to you by your stylist. Don't forget that your hair needs to be trimmed regularly, and good products are worth the investment for your hair to really show off these styles.

Best Hairstyles for Short Haircuts

Have you ever wondered how short hair can get interesting too, instead of all the long hair you see in the magazines?  In this article, we offer different techniques and looks for shorter hair.  I think you will enjoy them, as once in a while it is nice to wear a different look. Although, sometimes it's a challenge to know what are the best hairstyles for short hair. So here you go.

Twisty Texture Bun

Create a loose and carefree style using random sections pinned into a bun.

How to Style:

1. Spray dry hair with hair spray, like the Infinitum #3 or dry shampoo, such as Next Day Hair, even though it's technically not a dry shampoo, it acts like one. It gives the hair a great texture and holds for any kind of hairstyling.

2. Twist the random sections up and use bobby pins to secure them. Choose pins that match your hair color. Leave a little hair loose in the front around your face.

3. Curl the loose end with a curling iron.

4. Arrange loose ends in a messy pattern.

Brilliant Bouffant Hairstyle

This hairstyle is perfect for those who have delicate hair. It will give you a smooth shape full of volume paired with a hair accessory.

How to Style:

1. Towel dry hair before you attempt this hairstyle. Add some of the Volume Envy Mousse with a comb.

2. Round brush your hair and blow-dry to get volume.

3. Use a teasing brush to tease the top and back of the crown of your head.

4. Now you will need to smooth the front portion and create a bump using the side of the teasing brush. Smooth the sides back and over your ears and use bobby pins.

5. Use Infinitum #3 at the end for touchable hold and finishing touch.

Delicate Curls

In this hairstyle, curls are pulled back in a partial and the hairstyle is perfect for a day look or accessorized for the night!

How to Style

1. First of all part your hair to one side. Preheat 1-inch curling iron and collect some bobby pins. Use dry shampoo or Next Day Hair to give your hair extra volume.

2. Use heat setting spray as you work through smoothing the lower sections with a flat iron.

3. Take 1/4 to 1/2-inch sections of hair at the top of your head, curling each and pinning back. Remember to leave the curl shape as is when you release it so it keeps its shape as it lays over the smoothed hair.

4. Spray with medium to high hold hairspray, my suggestion is Infinium #3.

Messy Faux Bun

This awesome layered crop is styled up to look as if its long hair piled up into a trendy bun.

How to Style:

1. Towel dry hair to remove moisture completely from your hair.

2. Work a golf ball-sized amount of styling mousse, Volume Envy Extra, through the hair with a comb.

3. Now use dry air and a round brush to add volume and shape to the top section.

4. Smooth the sides and back.

5. Tease sections of the top slightly near your scalp to give structure to the style.

6. Roll medium to large-sized sections near the back of the crown of your head forward so they look as if they’re in the shape of a bun.

7. Secure sections with bobby pins.

8. Roll the front forward in sections to create volume around your hairline.

9. Finish with a medium-hold hairspray, Infinitum #3.

Full and Elegant Hairstyle

Thick curls full of body and movement and style with lots of volume and make short hair appear longer than it really is!

How to Style:

1. Shampoo and condition hair with products designed for curly hair, like the Innersence Hair Care line.

Best-hairstyles-for-short-wavy-hair-3.jpg

2. Towel dry hair by wringing out excess moisture. Do not rub hair since rubbing will cause unnecessary frizz.

3. Work a medium to high-hold styling mousse, Volume Envy Extra through your hair with a comb.

4. Use a large, round, pronged diffuser to lift hair and dry on a medium heat setting.

5. Choose a light styling serum or hair oil to run through locks, gently working it from bottom to top to maintain the volume, but add shine to your curls.

6. Finish with a medium-hold hairspray, Infinium #3 for all-day control.

Play with these ideas, and enjoy styling. Take pictures and share them on Instagram with the hashtag #shineforthathome

Hairstyling Tips Every Girl Should Know

12.jpg

Have you ever wondered how the hairstylists working backstage at fashion week make their fabulous styles last under the heat and clothing changes? Here are a few tips that will help you feel more masterful in your hairstyling efforts.

When curling, start with the mid section of your hair

Do you want your hair stay wavy for longer time? Spray your hair lightly with Infinium #3 about 12” from the head, spraying with the grain of the hair. Then start rolling from the mid section of your hair to the ends. It will help you get long lasting waves, and keep your ends healthy.

Keep your bobby pins in place with hairspray

You must use hairspray if you have sleek straight hair, and you are using pins. Spread out your hair pins on a towel and apply dry shampoo, such as the Volumetry SOS or Infinium #3 to them. This technique will help your hair pins hold in your sleek hair.

Use aluminum foil to help curl straight hair

If you hair cannot hold a curl, then try using aluminum foil. Spray the Infinium #3 Hairspray lightly as described above. Then wrap a section of hair with a long strip of foil, fold and coil the hair into a curl and tap, tap, tap with a flat iron. Let it cool in the coiled foil till you finish the whole head or where you desire curl. You will find your hair holding the curls better throughout the day. The hair gets really hot in the foil, so watch your fingers and don’t hold the heat too long.

Use dry shampoo before you go to bed
