An Easy Guide to Finding the Right Cut for Your Face Shape

Let me be the first to say that you are free to go with whatever hairstyle you like regardless of your face shape. If you want to chop your hair and get a sleek bob, go for it. Are you feeling some ’80s nostalgia and want to get a modern mullet? By all means! That being said, some haircuts naturally flatter specific face shapes. I want to share them with you in case you want to get a new cut but are stuck on which style to get. There are just so many to choose from and it can get kind of overwhelming!

Here’s a quick face shape guide to finding the best haircut.

Round

Round faces are beautiful - just look at Selena Gomez! Long layers add dimension to fuller cheeks and symmetrical features. For example, face-framing tendrils remove weight around the cheeks and add movement to thicker hair. Another style that works wonders for this face shape is a choppy pixie cut. Part it to the side and create volume and texture on top to elongate the face.

Styles you might want to avoid: Single-length cuts and bobs

Oval

My, lucky you! An oval face shape just like that of The Duchess of Cambridge can pull off the most versatile haircuts because of their well-balanced features. If you like long hairstyles, I suggest you go for minimal layers. If you want a shorter cut, a chic lob would be perfect since it’s universally flattering. Additionally, don’t be afraid to go big with dramatic curls because they’re just as great for oval faces.

Styles you might want to avoid: Nothing! Try to experiment with different hairstyles and choose the best one for you.

Heart/Diamond

These face shapes are determined by these striking features: wide cheekbones and a pointed chin. You can balance these with a haircut that increases or accentuates the lower half of your face. Consider a chic fringe, which adds character to your current haircut. Like Reese Witherspoon, you can also opt for face-framing layers that are curled away from your face to draw attention to your jawline.

Styles you might want to avoid: Middle-parted hairstyles with little to no shape.

Square/Rectangle

A square or rectangle face shape features a broad forehead, wide cheekbones, and a prominent jawline. Angelina Jolie is the perfect example. You need a haircut that will soften those features, but not too much as to drown them. Side-parted hairstyles beautifully complement this bone structure. An angled bob that is longer in the front will make your face appear slimmer. Don’t be afraid to dial up the volume, too. Think brushed-out waves and curly bobs.

Styles you might want to avoid: Single-length lobs and blunt bangs.
